2003 Canadian drama from director Richard Kwietniowski starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as a young banker on the rise, Dan Mahowny, who has a secret gambling problem. Based on a true story from a book by Gary Stephen Ross on the 1982 embezzlement scheme, the largest one-man bank fraud case in Canadian history. In this scene Mahowny has just been promoted to assistant branch manager, helps convince his bosses to make a substantial loan to a wealthy clients daughter (Sonja Smits) and figures out a way to satisfy his bookie (Maury Chaykin). Excellent performance from Hoffman makes this low budget movie worth the watch.

Lesley & Rick arrive at the casino for dinner. Les makes an off-handed joke about leaving the good jewelry at home. She tries to demonstrate control over her gambling to Rick and to herself. Rick is paged by the hospital for an emergency. Lesley stays behind and tells him that she’ll take a cab home. She mentions to Claudia that she’s down to her last ten dollars before she cashes a check that virtually empties her personal account. The next morning, R&L talk about the success of his first surgery since returning to work. He makes a comment about ‘facing whatever is spooking you’, like Lesley did at the casino the night before. She changes the subject and tells him it’s time to go to work. When Lesley arrives at the hospital she reads Amy the riot act for charging a $350 coat on her Wyndham’s charge. She tells Amy that she’ll learn her lesson if she has to take the coat back. (Truth be known – Lesley doesn’t have any money in her personal account to pay the bill). Rick tells Amy that he’ll talk to her to see what is bothering her. Lesley calls Wyndham’s credit department and tells then that there is a problem at the bank with her accounts. They grant her an extension until the end of the month to pay the bill. Rick tracks her down and pulls her aside to talk to her. He asks her what is bothering her?? He tells her that she almost took Amy’s head off (about the coat) and that is not like her. Les admits that laying into Amy at the hospital was not the best place to address …
